Todo transcurre en el verano de 1975, y narra la historia del Billy de 12 años, que está a punto de descubrir que su crecimiento le lleva a estar confundido mucho más de lo que él habría podido imaginarse. Es hijo único de un granjero que no comparte el compañerismo de otros muchachos de su escuela. Billy siente que nunca le prepararon ni para ser granjero ni jugador de rugby. Sin embargo, él sueña en una vida imaginaria en el espacio exterior, al mismo tiempo que aprende sobre su sexualidad, y se cuestiona todo lo que conoce, incluyendo su amistad de por vida con el comportamiento masculino de su amiga Louise, cuyo mundo está cambiando junto al suyo.

Set in rural New Zealand in the drought-parched summer of 1975, "50 Ways of Saying Fabulous" follows a chubby 12-year-old named Billy (Andrew Paterson) as he embarks on a wearisome journey of sexual discovery. Adapting Graeme Aitken’s novel, the writer and director, Stewart Main, convincingly depicts an emotionally immature world; but the movie's insistently playful tone and cheesy fantasy sequences ultimately work against its ambitions, undermining a story that seethes with abuse and sexual obsession.
